First Day of School

Summer is ending and that means that is is time for Julia and Brigham to head back to school.  They were both super excited for the annual backpacks that they had seen wrapped up and sitting on top of the computer armoire.  They knew what was inside but they couldn't wait to see what they looked like and what fun school supplies were stuffed inside.

So, Julia got up at 6am to practice piano and when they were all ready to go, they opened their backpacks, stuck 'em on and headed off to schoo.  Where, we of course, took the same traditional pictures by the flag pole.  It was a long day without them but it was great when Peter brought them home and they saw the "Welcome Home from Your 1st Day" poster they had made themselves the night before.
Porter and I had also spent a fair bit of time that day preparing a surprise for them.  Looking through the "Family Fun magazine, I found a fun idea that we thought we would try out.  We baked cupcakes, hollowed out a bit of the top center with a spoon, frosted them red/pink, and then rolled them in red sugar.  We topped them off with stems made from Tootsie Rolls and Leaves made from warmed up green Air Head candy.  They seemed fairly impressed even though they were tired.
Later that night I felt great when I put the rest in bags with gummy worms and delivered them to my laurels and Julia said, "Mom you are so coo.  You come up with the funnest ideas."  It was one of those moments when all your work is worth it and you just want to eat your kids they are so sweet.
On a slightly different note, that night we also went to dinner and while we were sitting there, Julia said, "I just love school so much I wish we could go back there right this minute."  To which Brigham replied in a terribly exhausted and confused voice, "Julia, we just spent the WHOLE day there and we have to go back when we wake up in the morning.  Why would you want to go back now?"  I think it may take him a bit more time to adjust to the long days.
The next day, however, Brigham ran in from school and said, "Mom I found out what my favoride subject is.  LUNCH!"  Julia of course came in right behind him saying, "That IS NOT a subject Brigham.  My favorite subject is science."  It must be so hard to have her as an older sister.
Since I have shared their comments I suppose I should end by sharing one of Porter's.  When I got out of the shower early one morning last week, Porter was laying my bed and said, "Mom, I am magic with my boogers."  After swallowing down my breakfast for the second time that morning, I asked him why to which he replied, "Because when I pull one out and roll it in my hads, it disappears."  He is just one laugh after another.  You have got to love a kid that can make you laugh so easily.
