Favorite Book

I was thinking about books I have read and books I have loved quite a few as well. I don't often read non-fiction but I have enjoyed a few like, "How to Win Friends and Influence People," (you aren't laughing if you have read it, and "The Richest Man in Babylon." I more enjoy fiction. Sometimes just for fun, sometimes just to learn, and sometimes I am finding that I like to read and cry to feel more alive. I like historical fiction and stories based on some real event but I feel you can learn and/or enjoy just about anything. The problem is, I don't believe in reading books twice (don't tell me they change with time, there are too many other books I haven't read that I know will give me something new (hence my problem with the "Book of Mormon" which needs to be read repeatedly to continue learning from)).

Anywho, since I am always looking for new books, I was talking with my Father-in-law, Jim, and asked him what one book he would recommend to people. He of course said the "Book of Mormon," but when pressed into picking a novel, he went with a book by Ayn Rand called "Shrugging Atlas." I checked it out at the library today and it is over 1000 pages with large pages and small print. I decided to try another book by the same author but it brought up a question. What is your favorite book. I know this is hard, am I looking for entertainment value, lessons learned, kids, adult? That is up to you. If you could give one book, besides, "The Book of Mormon" to someone, what would it be?

To get us started I made Peter pick one and he went with "Ender's Game" by Orson Scott Card
I (Adi, or Adrianne depending on where I know you from) am going to list a few because it is my blog.
"Snow Flower and the Secret Fan" I hated the book but think about it more than any other book and I hope to never forget some of the lessons there.
"The Chosen" by Chaim Potok was my favorite in high school
"The Hiding Place" was my favorite from my old book club.
"My Sisters Keeper" taught me about perspective and "the greater good."

I want and expect to hear from everyone who reads this. If you can't comment on my blog I want you to e-mail me at adi@xlear.com. I will take the comments and paste them into this post and keep it as my book list. Thanks, Adi

For Christmas last year I got the complete works by Jane Austin. Fabulous. It has Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, So many others I can't think of right now. I liked most of them, but I love Jane Austin.

If you want some fast reading I would suggest The Giver. It is at a 6th grade reading level I believe, but it is very good.

So you already know my favorite book! STARGIRL. I also enjoyed The Alchemist

As for others I love... I've really been digging church books lately.
The Continuous Atonement is the one I'm reading right now.

Now, you know me, I'm not much of a reader but everyone I know has been telling me how good "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" is. So, I suppose you could try it and I'll let you know what I think as soon as the movie comes out:)
By the way, my dad gave Mark a copy of "Atlas Shrugged" about a year ago and he has yet to crack the cover-it's huge!

So I read Atlas Shrugged a few years ago and all I remember is it was kind of weird and futuristic. I felt the same about Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, it was weird but there was a lot to think about. I like The Color Purple, Three Cups of Tea, The Secret Life of Bees (not great, but I thought there was a lot to think about), The Count of Monte Cristo, The Kite Runner, Charles Dickens (right now I'm reading David Copperfield), The Song of the Meadowlark and My Anotnia by Willa Cather and Their Eyes Were Watching God. I know that is kind of a long list but really my all time favorite is Pride and Prejudice,(I also just read Persuasion, for the first time and I really liked it). Happy Reading!
