Grandpa Jim and Grandma Linda had their traditional Christmas party again this year. It is so fun to see all of Jim's kids and grand kids. There is always plenty of food and plenty of friendly people to chat with. This year instead of having Santa come to the party, Jim spoke and then he handed out the gifts. I loved it of course because we don't do Santa and I didn't have to try and keep my kids from telling people it was just someone dressed up. As a s side note, I will never understand why grown people can lie to kids and then get mad at me if my kids happen to say the truth. I am all for letting everyone do their own thing but if that is the way we want it then people shouldn't harass us about our decision. Enough of that soap box. Anyway, the party was great and everyone had a lot of fun.For Christmas eve this year we went to see the lights at temple square. It was cold but not overly crowded and the kids had a good time. We came home to our traditional pajamas and this year we added books to the Christmas Eve tradition. We had our traditional "dinner" of beef stick, crackers, cheese, chips, and sparkling cider. I'm not sure anybody really likes it so we may need to add something of substance next year but we will see.
On Christmas morning Grandma Julie and Grandpa Terry came over early to watch the kids open presents. For the "big" gift this year, everyone got a blanket for their bed made from fabric that they had picked out. We sewed their first and middle name on them and then set them up in new rooms without them knowing. Julia and Martie got Brigham and Porter's old room while they moved downstairs and Eleanor got a room set up in Julia's old room. They were all super excited to find where all their stuff had been moved to and they got to put their pillowcases that Julia had made them on their new beds. Julia also got the football she had wanted so badly, everyone got a sled or tube for the snow, Martie got a baby doll that really looks like she is eating and came with a matching outfit, and the boys got remote control cars. We spent some time visiting family and then came back home and went to the church to drive the RC cars in the gym. Julia threw the football a bit with Peter since Grandpa Jim had done an awesome job teaching her how. It was a busy day but so much fun to see so much family. I love Christmases that are spent visiting a lot of people. It seems to me that the birth of the Savior should be a celebration. Not a time to sleep. I guess that is why Handel's Messiah is my favorite. We should be excited about the news and want to shout it from the rooftops. Anyway, it was a great Christmas.
Since Brigham and Porter got sleds and Julia got a big snow tube, we did a lot of sledding over the break. It was wonderful because I discovered that they could all go sledding without me if I was in the car in the parking lot. I could read my scriptures or write in my journal and they would come warm up when they needed and then go back out when ready. I was so surprised at how well even Porter did pulling his sled up the hill each time by himself. I can't wait to do more sledding next year.
