2 Week Visitor

So, I mentioned in a previous post that I would tell you about our two week visitor. Well our two week visitor has become a four week visitor. Here's how:
When we came home from Sunday dinner at Grandma Linda's a few weeks ago, we pulled up to a dog sitting on the corner of our yard. I went straight at him like I was going to hit him in hopes that I would scare him off. But alas, he just sat there. We honked, we took pictures with a bright flash, and still he just sat there. I figured he couldn't walk or something so I parked the van and went out to tell him to leave. I tried explaining that he needed to find a way to walk to someone else's home because we are NOT animal people. I told him that we already had a cat that catches mice for us and we had no use for him. Oddly enough; he didn't understand. I turned to Peter who was coming out of the garage and the dog got up. Apparently he could move; he just didn't do so on command. So, we carried the kids in the house, made sure he was out of the garage, and went to bed.
Next morning, Peter gets up to go biking with his brother Mark and comes in at 6am to tell me "my" dog is still in the corner of our yard. I continued lounging in bed until the kids would have no more of it and then went out to check. Sure enough, he was still there. I had pity on the squashed face and decided maybe he needed some food to fill out. I know I frequently feel like I am so hungry I will implode. So, I looked through the house. Now I knew from our experiences with a cat that animals are not fans of soy milk so I gave him cow milk. He wasn't impressed. Realizing that he must want meat, I found some canned chicken salad in our 72 hour kits. I gave him that and he thought it was good. By this time, the kids were pretty interested and so I thought I better get him away from our house.
When I called animal control, they explained that since the 4th, they had been inundated with pets who had run in fear of the fireworks. I said my kids would be happy to keep him for a few weeks and they could give my number to anyone calling after a lost pug. They said great and that was that. Treasure stopped by to make sure we weren't trying to skin him and sell the fur. While she was here, she kindly informed Peter that the dog was male. Peter said "He has nipples, he is a girl." Treasure explained, that so does he but he is a boy and the penis counts as the overriding factor when determining gender. Thank your Treasure.
So, short story long, we took him to the vet to see if he had a chip and I learned why dogs like to stick their heads out the window. Some may say that it is because they like to smell all the different smells. I however now know that they do it so that they don't have to smell themselves. The scent of a dog confined in a car could be bottled and used by Jack Bauer as a replacement for water boarding. Anyway, he didn't have a chip so we kept him for a bit longer.
Finally, after giving his owners a week to call, I listed him on KSL.
Meanwhile , Mark and Amy came to visit and decided they liked the dog. So, Peter told the one person that had called to buy him and said he was giving him to his brother. Nathan has agreed to fly this dog in his plane to Washington in a week and the dog will have a new home with Tessa, Sawyer, and Rigdon. It is a perfect ending. We have had the dog for as long as we wanted, and now that we have given the owners four weeks to call about him, we can send him off without any guilt.
So, what do we think about our 2 (now 4) week visitor? He is a good dog. His favorite place to sit is on the border between our yard and the Gordon's where we didn't put up the last fence panel. This enables him to have a clear view of both back doors and he can run to anyone that may be coming out to play with him. He chases Julia and Brigham but knows that Porter hates him so he keeps his distance though Porter still breaks into a blood curdling scream if he ever finds he is outside by himself with the dog. He will swing on the swing with Peter, and he likes the neighbors dog food more that our cat food. Lastly, Pugs are probably the next target for Xlear Nasal Wash to market. If you have ever heard a pug breathe, the reason is self explanatory.
Oh, and if you are wondering abut his name, it depends on who you ask, Julia said we can't just call him dog because he wouldn't know we were talking to him, so she named him Pugsy Wugsy Cutie Pie. Brigham and Peter call him Pugs, Porter calls him "NO,"I call him Dog but when pressed for a name, I affectionately refer to him as Mutsy.

The thought of your kids experiencing the true joy of childhood just fills my heart with overflowing giddiness! They will always remember the month that their heartless parents allowed them to know what it is to feel true unconditional dog love!

P.S. Porter may need a bit more time, I will be sending over one of my dogs this week.

He is kinda cute. How fun to have a temporary dog - I hope your kids will be OK when he leaves. Parker informed us a couple of weeks ago that every year since he was nine his birthday wish when blowing out candles was that he could get a dog. Who knew -he has never said anything about that. We babysat a dog for a week and that was good for me.

So we just watched Marley and Me this weekend. And while I strongly dislike dogs and most animals I was in tears during that movie and I just felt like I was denying my children the joy of childhood by not letting them have a dog. So I think that it is perfect to have a temporary dog, congratulations to Mark and Amy!
